Developmental Editing
The read you cannot get from someone who loves you
Your friends will tell you it is good. Agents will tell you nothing at all. Neither of those helps you fix chapter eleven. A developmental edit is the read in between: someone who takes the book as seriously as you do and is under no obligation to be kind about the parts that are not working yet.
What's included
- A full read of the complete manuscript, twice
- An edit letter, usually eight to fifteen pages, on structure, pacing, and character
- In-line notes throughout the manuscript, not just at chapter breaks
- A one-hour call once you have had a week to sit with the letter
- One follow-up read of any chapter you rebuild, at no extra cost
Worth asking any editor
Ask any editor what happens if their notes do not land. If the answer is not a real conversation included in the price, you are buying a document, not an editor.
