Ninth Draft

Developmental Editing

The read you cannot get from someone who loves you

Your friends will tell you it is good. Agents will tell you nothing at all. Neither of those helps you fix chapter eleven. A developmental edit is the read in between: someone who takes the book as seriously as you do and is under no obligation to be kind about the parts that are not working yet.

Manuscript page covered in handwritten editorial notes with a felt-tip pen resting across it

What's included

  • A full read of the complete manuscript, twice
  • An edit letter, usually eight to fifteen pages, on structure, pacing, and character
  • In-line notes throughout the manuscript, not just at chapter breaks
  • A one-hour call once you have had a week to sit with the letter
  • One follow-up read of any chapter you rebuild, at no extra cost

Worth asking any editor

Ask any editor what happens if their notes do not land. If the answer is not a real conversation included in the price, you are buying a document, not an editor.

A finished developmental pass. The letter explains it; the pages prove it.

Every manuscript comes back marked like this. The letter tells you what to change; the pages show you where.

★★★★★

“The edit letter told me my book started ninety pages in. I did not want that to be true. It was true, and the book sold eight months later.”

See the edit before you buy the edit

Send your first ten pages and I will edit them properly and send the notes back, free. Not a summary of what I would do, the actual marked-up pages. If those notes are not worth having, we both learned something cheaply and you owe me nothing.
